Implementation: The Next Steps

The task has been initiated. Now, key stakeholders from throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties are charting a road map to establish the Inland Empire as the center for green technology – a move that will bring new jobs, greater opportunities and a better quality of life to the region. Here are the next steps to be taken:

Representatives from the First Principals Forum were split into three groups and assigned specific tasks and situations to consider. From that June 1 meeting, they formulated their own set of priorities:

Group 1: Policy and Sustainable Approaches
This group identifies and reviews best-practices, ordinances, regulations and incentives that may be effectively implemented region-wide.

Group 2: Sustainable Economic Development
This group develops a GVI plan SWOT and identifies sources of capital for economic development through public funding, private investment, incentives and other options

Group 3: The Green Brain Trust/Education
This group canvasses all educational institutions in Riverside and San Bernardino counties for environmental, green and sustainable qualifications and content. They also will undertake a Technology Development plan that identifies businesses and technologies that may be attracted to the Green Valley.

The stakeholder groups met over the span of three months, in July, August and September. Researchers with the University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles and Pitzer College collaborated with each group to gather and analyze data that addresses the various focus points.

Meeting Tasks:
July: To screen ideas and develop a plan
August: To assess the implementation of plans
September: To review and finalize findings

On October 22, the Green Valley Initiative held its second Principals Forum to unveil its set of strategic recommendations and next steps. The goal of the recommendations are to integrate social, economic and environmental forces to bring green-tech jobs, wiser land-use, green building and purchasing polices, and sustainability education to the region. Secretaries of State, Dale E. Bonner and Mike Chrisman publicly announced their support for the initiative and California’s Director of Conservation, Bridgett Luther, announced plans to launch the State’s pilot recycling education program in the Inland Empire.
